Understanding Lake James's water level

Lake James is the headwater of the Catawba chain, and it is unusual in being held back by three separate dams rather than one: Linville, Paddy Creek and Catawba. The name people often add to that list, Bridgewater, is the development and its powerhouse rather than a dam. Construction began in August 1916, the Bridgewater station entered commercial operation in May 1919, and dam work continued through 1923. The Great Flood of 1916 is part of this story, but not the way it is usually told: the flood wrecked the power company's existing stations and that damage prompted the project rather than interrupting it. The lake carries the name of the company's chairman, James B. Duke.

It runs a clear seasonal cycle. The published monthly target is 1,198.5 feet from May through October, easing to 1,194 in February, with a rule-curve floor of 1,192 in late winter. That four and a half foot drawdown is classic winter flood storage, and it is a different mechanism from Jocassee's, whose band is set by pumped-storage cycling rather than the calendar. In ordinary operation this is one of the steadiest lakes on the site, with a median day-to-day change of about a tenth of a foot.

Which makes September 2024 stand out sharply. Hurricane Helene pushed the lake to 110.75 feet on the local gauge, 1,210.75 above sea level, in what officials described as a thousand-year flood; the previous record was 1,207 feet during Hurricane Frances in 2004. The daily record shows a rise of 7.1 feet in a single day, by far the largest in five years of data. Water rose twenty-four feet inside the Bridgewater powerhouse, ruining the auxiliary transformer and both turbine lubrication machines, with repairs exceeding ten million dollars; the minimum-flow valve was back that November and the large turbines by February 2025. All three dams had been reinforced against seismic loading in the years before, at a cost of roughly seventy-seven million dollars across the three, and a federal inspection in October 2024 found them structurally sound with no damage from the storm.

What happened to the walleye in Lake James?

Invasive species broke the population. Walleye were self-sustaining here from the 1950s through about 2010, then recruitment collapsed after white perch were detected in 2008 and alewife and blueback herring in 2012. The fishery is now almost entirely hatchery-dependent: marking studies showed 92 to 99 percent of the 2012 to 2015 year classes were stocked fish. There is a fifteen-inch minimum and an eight-fish daily creel.
